Buck's Antiquities

SquarePrints from Buck's Antiquities Square

Samuel and Nathaniel Buck

These prints, originally titled ... Views of the Ruins of the most noted ABBEYS, CASTLES, &c ..., were engraved by or under the direction of Samuel and Nathaniel Buck from the 1720s to the 1740s. Based on drawings they (largely Samuel) made while wandering rural England, the images were printed in portfolios of twenty-four images, each portfolio outlining the antiquities of one, two, or three counties. Each ruin or remains has a brief history of the building under the image; many are graced with the heraldic arms of the then current owner.

After their deaths, the original engraving plates were acquired by Robert Sayer, altered only in so far as the print number is concerned (the originals were numbered 1-24 in each portfolio at lower left, Sayer re-numbered them consecutively, 1-428 at lower right), had them printed by D. Bond, and began selling them in 1774, either as loose plates or bound in three volumes as Buck's Antiquities; or, Venerable Remains of ... Castles, Monasteries, Palaces, &c.&c..

These are all originals printed from the plates engraved by the Buck brothers.

While most are from the second issue printed by Sayers in the 1770s (marked "Sayers" under the image in the lists), there are many from the first issue as well (marked "Buck"). The second issue are, generally, on consistently weighted, better quality paper (Bucks' paper can range from a weight similar to that of heavy typing paper to very light card), with less foxing than the original strikes, but are decidedly not the first issue and are, therefore, less desirable but more affordable than the original strikes. The Sayers prints were almost certainly from bound volumes of the Antiquities, as the top edge has shallow binding notches and light creasing, and the other three edges are gilded; some of the Sayers images have been similarly bound along the left edge. The original sheets are about 19" x 11½", with image sizes approximately 14½" x 7½"; several have been hand-coloured.

In some cases, both states of the images are available.

These striking images frame up beautifully.

Un-matted, as these are, we offer them at
$60 (Buck) / $35 (Sayers) each for the black and white,
$75 (Buck) / $50 (Sayers) each for the hand-coloured

(unless otherwise priced below the image).

We have arranged the prints on separate pages according to region to make browsing them easier.
